ENZYMOLOGY

Course ID: NBT/BŻ-SE>ENZYM
Course title: ENZYMOLOGY
Semester: 6 / Spring
ECTS: 3
Lectures/Classes: 15 / 30 hours
Field of study: Biotechnology
Study cycle: 1st cycle
Type of course: compulsory
Prerequisites: organic chemistry, biochemistry, general microbiology
Contact person: dr inż. Wojciech Łaba; wojciech.laba@upwr.edu.pl
Short description: The course aims to present the structure and properties of enzymes, kinetics of enzymatic reactions and methods of enzymes purification and preservation. During the classes students carry out experiments consisting of enzymes purification, determination of their kinetic parameters and analysis of the influence of inhibitors on their enzymatic activity. The classes allow the students to acquire skills for analyzing enzymatic activity as well as to calculate the protein purification balance.
Full description: Kinetics, enzyme properties, mechanisms of enzymatic catalysis, rules of isolation of enzymatic proteins from plants anminals and microorganisms, purification techniques involving fractionated precipitation, specific adsorption, ion exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography, electrophoretic techniques, immobilization of proteins as a method for their stabilization, evaluation criteria for purity of enzymatic preparations.
Bibliography: Compulsory: 1. The enzyme reference, Purich D.,L., Allison R.,D., Acad Press, USA, 2002, 2. Introduction to Biotechnology, Thieman W.,J., Palladino M.,A., Pearson Education, 2004, 3.
